UPDATE FEB 21, 2019
Benton Council Chambers was full of local residents, business owners and others in the community to hear from Mayor Farmer and his staff about how to grow Benton. There were people from all walks of life with varying opinions on what Benton needs. Some ideas that came out were doing things to encourage more businesses and visitors to the historic downtown area. From creating large murals on buildings, to more sidewalks and nicer crosswalks, to more city involvement in festivals. It’s important to keep what’s great about Benton, and welcome the new things too. The Shoppach (SHOO-per) house is one example that came up. It’s the oldest building in Saline County. It sits next to the newest building, ACDI headquarters.
The main point Farmer, as well as Brad Jordan, Director of Community & Economic Development and Tina Coston, Marketing Director needed everyone to see is that the Mayor’s slogan, “Together We Can Do More,” isn’t just a slogan. It means that people need to take ownership and get involved. Stay tuned for news of more of these meetings to help everyone learn how to get involved. Meanwhile, if you have ideas – and especially if you have solutions – contact the City of Benton. Or you can just comment on this article.

Benton Mayor Tom Farmer and his staff will host a Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, February 21st in Council Chambers at the Benton Municipal Complex at 114 s. East Street.
Farmer stated this meeting is “to discuss how together we can work to revitalize the downtown area, and build on the great things we already have to offer our visitors and new families moving to the area.”
RSVP to come early for dinner at 5:00 p.m. Call 501-776-5900 to let them know you’re coming. The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. There will be a brief presentation followed by a brainstorming session with attendees.
I spoke with Farmer about his goals and he stated that he wants to begin doing more with what Benton has to offer. He wants to begin with historic downtown Benton and move outward from there.
“We want your input and ideas. Together we can do more!” stated Farmer.
It’s where we have our parades, it’s where we celebrate the holidays with our beautiful decorated county courthouse, it’s where the new farmer’s market pavilion is built, and there are about 200% more businesses in operation than there were just five years ago. If you’re a resident or business owner or investor, come to this meeting and put in your thoughts.
