In the first quarter, it wasn’t obvious that the game was going to result in such a blowout as the Panthers and Yellowjackets swapped points with a score of 14-12.
Although the first quarter was close, that was not the case for the rest of the game. Benton tacked on 21 more points to take a lead of 35-12. An elite ground game headed the influx of scores as Senior RB Luther Tucker III ran for 3 touchdowns and Junior QB Drew Davis rushed for 2.
The offense wasn’t the only scoring factor, though. Senior LB Walter Hicks forced a fumble that was returned by Senior DT Jay Alford for a touchdown. A few plays later, Alford forced a fumble on a strip sack that Hicks returned for the defense’s second touchdown.
On Sheridan’s next possession, the Panther D stuffed the Yellowjackets to force a turnover on downs. With 15 seconds left in the second quarter, Senior Garrett Honeycutt boomed a 38-yard field to close out the first half with a score of 52-12.
To open up the second half scoring swell, Senior O’Marcus King returned the Sheridan kickoff for a 90-yard touchdown. Later, Drew Davis and Senior WR Elias Payne connected for a 6-yard touchdown pass increasing the score to 65-12.
The Panther offense sealed the dominant performance with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Junior Will Carter to finalize the scoring at a whopping 72 points.
The Yellowjackets had a few scoring drives at the end of the second half setting the final score at 72-25. The Panthers fought through injuries and moved to 5-1. They look forward to a much-missed home-field advantage as they will take against El Dorado this coming Friday.
