Mary “Gusaline” Shiflett
Mary “Gusaline” Shiflett, affectionately known as “Gusaline,” was born on November 18, 1930. She was a proud graduate of Bauxite High School, class of 1948. During her time at Bauxite, she distinguished herself both academically and athletically. As the Salutatorian of her graduating class, she exemplified academic excellence. Additionally, her leadership and athletic talent shone brightly as a member of the Bauxite High School basketball team.

The team, which played in the Bauxite Community Center when it functioned as a gym, benefited immensely from Gusaline’s skills on the court. Her prowess in basketball earned her the nickname “Sure Shot Shiflett,” a testament to her reliability and skill in the game. Gusaline’s exceptional performance in the 1948 season was recognized statewide, as she earned All-State Honors, cementing her legacy in Bauxite’s sports history. Before her high school achievements, Gusaline was also recognized for her academic excellence as the Valedictorian of her 8th-grade class at Shaw School.
Gusaline’s ties to Bauxite did not end with her high school graduation. Alongside her husband, George Thompson, she remained an active and dedicated member of the Bauxite community. The couple attended numerous sporting events, band performances, and graduations, celebrating the achievements of their four children who followed in their mother’s footsteps.
Their involvement in the community extended further when their youngest child was in elementary school at Pine Haven. Gusaline and George became active members of the Booster Club, an organization crucial to the success of the school’s athletic programs. During their time with the Booster Club, they played a significant role in managing the concessions for both junior high and senior high football and basketball games, as well as the elementary-level games. Their commitment to these activities highlights Gusaline’s enduring love for her community and her unyielding support for Bauxite’s young athletes.
Mary Gusaline Shiflett passed on June 3, 2011. Her legacy at Bauxite is one of excellence, dedication, and community spirit. Her academic and athletic achievements during her time at Bauxite High School, coupled with her lifelong involvement in the school’s activities and organizations, make her a deserving candidate for the Bauxite Hall of Fame. “Sure Shot Shiflett” not only left her mark on the basketball court but also in the hearts of all those who had the privilege of knowing her.
