UPDATE JAN 21, 2020:
The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) announced plans in September 2019 to permanently close W. Sevier Street in Benton where it connects to the frontage road next to Benton First Church of the Nazarene. (This is NOT the road next to Pho 98 and Mac’s One Stop. It will stay open.) Plans were delayed while there was a re-design, but now weather permitting, the closure will happen Wednesday, January 22, 2020. As of that time forward, Construction will change this side of W. Sevier Street to a cul-de-sac.
This change is part of construction to widen Interstate 30 to six lanes in Saline County. ARDOT will build a new configuration at South Street and Sevier Street in Benton, according to ARDOT officials.
Message boards, barricades, signage, and flaggers will be used to notify the public at Rasburry Street and the frontage road that the West Sevier Street connection is closed. Access will be maintained for local businesses as well as the West South Street connections to the eastbound frontage road.
The public is advised to be cautious when traveling in the work zone. Areas adjacent to the interstate may experience noise impacts during nighttime hours.
This project (Job CA0601) is part of ARDOT’s Connecting Arkansas Program and includes widening 5.5 miles of Interstate 30 to three lanes in each direction, from the interchange with U.S. Highway 70 (Exit 111) to Sevier Street in Benton (Exit 116). The project also includes improvements at the Highway 67 interchange (Exit 114). More information on this $187.3 million project is available at ConnectingArkansasProgram.com.
Drivers should exercise caution when approaching and traveling through all highway work zones. Additional travel information can be found at IDriveArkansas.com or ARDOT.gov. You can also follow us on Twitter @myARDOT.
UPDATE OCT 7, 2019:
The permanent closure of the west end of W. Sevier Street on the south side of Interstate 30 has been delayed several times, but it will still happen, according to officials at the Arkansas Department of Transportation. ARDOT announced last month that they would turn the street into a cul-de-sac.
There was some confusion about whether it would really close, after ARDOT’s original press release stated it would be Sept. 11, but an LED sign at the soon-to-be closed street had a closure date that kept changing and then eventually the date was left off the sign.
“Due to utility conflicts, re-design efforts have delayed closure of West Sevier Street to lessen the need for additional utility relocations; however, we expect this work to begin within the next 2-4 weeks,” stated ARDOT spokesman David Nilles.
There is no definite date set, but MySaline will update. You may still access the frontage road from South St./Leander St. after the work is finished. W. Sevier has been used by locals for many years as an entrance to the frontage road near Exit 116. ARDOT is widening I-30 in the area and re-designing various aspects of the ramps and bridges.
