Book: The Widow and the Highlander
Author: Martha Keyes
My Rating: 4 Angsty Stars
Yes, friends, it’s another book set in Scotland. And you might be thinking, if you’ve read one you’ve read them all. But I’m here to tell you, The Widow and The Highlander is anything but predictable. I went into it expecting a lighthearted romance and instead I got slapped with angst on top of angst…and LOVED it!
This book was full of everything I love. Strong female lead, charming Scottish gentleman, a feisty sister, a daring rescue attempt at sea! It was so unexpected. I loved Christina, she’d been through so much and she’d come out on the other side with scars. And then there was Lachlan, war hardened and bent on revenge. But when faced with Christina’s well-being vs. his revenge it was no competition.
So, why if I loved it so much did I only give it 4 stars? I’ll tell you, as much as I loved the angst, the drama was at times a bit much. I mean, Christina has like six near death experiences from poisoning attempts to arson. It’s like every time you turn the page this poor woman is about to die. Which makes for an exciting book, but by the end the BIG moment kind of lost its impact because she’d already survived so many other ridiculous things.
Overall, I loved this book so much. There’s a sequel coming out soon and I’ll probably inhale that one too! If you’ve ever read Nichole Van, you’ll probably like Martha Keyes. I’ve added several of her books to my list!
