Book: Kiss Me Now
Author: Melanie Jacobson
My Rating: 3 Stubborn Stars
Full disclosure bookworms, I picked this book for a lighthearted Valentine’s Day review, and it was not as lighthearted as I anticipated. I feel like I should tell you up front, there are a few references to sexual assault, not described in detail. It just felt like a heavy topic to cover in a romcom. However, I still enjoyed it! I just needed to get that warning out there so you aren’t caught by surprise like I was.
Ok, let’s get into it. We’ve got Ian, a private investigator for a prestigious law firm in D.C. he spends his days digging up dirt on the rich and powerful, and it might be making him a teensy bit cynical. And he might be a teensy bit in denial about that. I loved Ian’s character arc because in the beginning I kind of thought he was a jerk, but by the end I was a fan. Then we have Brooke, a first year high school biology teacher, with a past she doesn’t like to talk about. Her best friend is her 80 year old neighbor (AKA Ian’s grandma). And her hobbies include gardening with her geriatric BFF and renovating her house very slowly. I would definitely put this in the enemies to lovers category because these two despise each other before they ever actually meet. And they have some A+ passive aggressive banter. I loved the tension between them and how it subtly changed as they realized that maybe the line between enemies and lovers was getting thin. However, they are both stubbornness personified, so it takes them forever to accept it.
I’ll let you decide if this is a positive or a negative, but my favorite characters were actually neither of the main characters. I adored Ian’s grandma, Miss Lucy. She was the quintessential sassy grandmama. My second favorite character was Noah, the wrestling coach (and Brooke’s best friend other than Miss Lucy). Good news though, there’s another book about Noah and I am really looking forward to reading that one!
Technically this is the second book in a series, but I didn’t read the first one and I wasn’t lost at all. So, I don’t think it matters if you read them in order or not. I made the mistake of starting it late at night and ended up staying awake until 3am just to finish it. So, I’d certainly recommend it as a quick read, and it’s clean as well. It’s a great little romcom for Valentine’s Day weekend!
