UPDATE:
The Saline County Sheriff’s Office released the subject’s name as James Lott, age 52, of Benton. deputies stopped lot for traffic violations. Lott was uncooperative and refused to identify himself or provide a driver’s license, according to police.
The deputy stated in a report that the subject did not recognize his authority as a law officer and he does not recognize judges. Upon arrival of another officer from Benton Police Department for backup, Lott became agitated when asked again for his driver’s license. He refused and when advised he was going to end up getting arrested for not providing it, he started backing away and pulled a knife on the deputy and other officer.

Lott refused all commands to drop the knife and stop, ultimately fleeing on foot. When stopped about a block away, Lott continued to refuse commands and the officer deployed his less than lethal 12 gauge with bean bags. Lott immediately fell to the ground, allowing officers to move forward and place hands on him. Lott continued to be combative, leading to an altercation between him and the officers. Lott was eventually taken into custody and transported to Saline Memorial Hospital emergency room for medical clearance, then to the detention center.
Lott was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer (felony), fleeing on foot (misdemeanor), disorderly conduct (misdemeanor), obstructing government operations (misdemeanor), and resisting arrest (misdemeanor).
PREVIOUSLY:
A man was arrested in Benton Thursday morning after an altercation with the police in Benton, on Sevier Street near 1st Street. See map below.
The Saline County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), along with assistance by the Benton Police Department (BNPD) arrested male subject. According to Captain Parsons of SCSO, the subject was armed with a couple of knives and made threats.
Officers deployed a “less lethal bean bag.” This is a tool that officers use to stun a subject long enough to apprehend them. It’s also called a baton round, since it looks like a short baton and delivers lead shot encased in a small pillow.
SCSO has not released the subject’s name. He is in custody at the Saline County Detention Center. No one was seriously injured. More information as we get it.
