In its first year, Bryant High School Hornet Media was named one of only twelve National Broadcast Excellence Award recipients by the Student Television Network (STN) during the recent 2022 convention held in Long Beach, California. The award was announced on Saturday, February 19th.
Student Television Network is a national organization which supports, promotes, and recognizes excellence in scholastic broadcast journalism, filmmaking and multimedia.
The Broadcast Excellence award honors regularly-scheduled, student-produced broadcasting programs from schools across the nation who meet a standard of excellence. Programs are evaluated holistically, based on one show entry, as well as the program’s website and social media channels. It is considered the most prestigious award for broadcast programs affiliated with STN.
Hornet Media, led by instructor Michael Westbrook, earned a previous award from STN. The story, “Playoff Run Begins” placed third nationally in the sports story category. It was produced by sophomore reporter Carsyn Hobson and senior videographer Liam Babbitt.
The broadcasting program is a new offering at Bryant High School. Students may choose from several levels of television courses, along with a course on sports production. Students gain skills in television production including video, camera, lighting, microphones, script creation and editing, and live broadcast, all designed to prepare them for the pursuit of a career in television.
In less than one school year, student teams have produced:
• Weekly pregame shows plus game highlights for the 2021 Hornet Football season.
• Livestream of all the home Lady Hornet and Hornet Basketball games.
• The Bryant Buzz Monthly News Program featuring school and district news.
• Hornet News Now featuring Bryant High School stories.
• What’s Happening Hornets Podcast featuring recaps of campus events with student interviews.
