Monica Davidson has announced that she will be running as a Democrat for Saline County Justice of the Peace District 2. A Saline county native with roots in the county going back into the 1800s, Davidson lives in Shannon Hills in the home purchased by her grandparents in 1964.
“I’ve grown up in this community, I’ve watched mayors come and go, I’ve ridden my bike through these streets, and seen the changes in the city and the county throughout my life. I love this community, and I want to work to keep it a great place for my kids to grow up,” she said.
Davidson holds a degree in anthropology and a master’s degree in professional and technical writing, both from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Until recently, she worked as a grant and medical writer on contract with the UAMS Institute for Digital Health and Innovation. She also served a year as an AmeriCorps VISTA with the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance.
“Both of these positions, as well as experiences while I was in college, have given me a unique perspective on the demographics and needs of the average Arkansan. I’m the daughter of two postal workers, my dad was retired Air Force.” she said. “I come from blue collar stock, and my time at UAMS and AHRA gave me insight into the lives of Arkansans from the rural areas to the urban and how different life can be simply due to the zip code you reside in.”
“I’m excited for this opportunity to again serve my community and to bring voice to the concerns of the people of District 2, from all walks of life. It’s time for younger residents to step up and realize they have a place in our government as well, and I hope to show that,” Davidson said. “I plan to advocate for the creation of places for families to enjoy and learn about the rich history of our county, as well as be more involved in the community around them. When we all come together, really great things can happen.
“I’d also like to bring to attention the food insecurity that affects our community. Davis Elementary, which is the public elementary for most of the children in my district, has over 60% of students considered low-income. More than 70% of the kids served by Landmark Elementary, the PCSSD school some in District 2 are zoned for, are low-income. Both districts have overall low-income rates below 50%, so that means the kids in our district are particularly vulnerable.”
