Book: The Last Knight
- Author: Nicola S. Dorrington
- My Rating: 4 out of 5 Swords
I use the Goodreads App to help keep track of all the books I have read, am reading, and want to read. And Goodreads uses magic (or an algorithm – who knows?) to recommend books for me. This was one of them. Honestly, I can’t say that this is the best book I ever read. I can say it was delightfully unpredictable. I’m a sucker for King Arthur books, but this was different than any other Arthurian books I’ve ever read.
Where to begin? It’s modern day and 17-year-old Cara thinks she might be going crazy. She has nightmares of the future, but discovers she’s not going crazy… she’s just sharing consciousness with King Arthur. Totally normal. Lancelot, Gwain, and Percival are there too! Of course, they’re mysterious heartthrobs who might have the answers to all of Cara’s questions. But first, they have to go on a QUEST!
I found it funny in several parts, especially with Cara and Arthur sharing thoughts… good stuff. Lancelot, Gwain, and Percival as leather jacket wearing bad boys? YES! Percy being in love with modern times, eating everything in sight, and adopting modern phrases? Loved it. Wished there was more of it. It was also full of surprises. For instance, would you guess that time travel was involved? Because it is, and usually I roll my eyes at time travel, however this time I was loving it. Or how about a “vengeful, homicidal dragon,” a griffin, a cockatrice, and a Phoenix? All there!
I had a few minor complaints. Dorrington used lots of short sentences. I can’t put my finger on why it bugged me, but I found myself wishing for more complex sentences. Also, the dragon was mentioned like it would be a big deal, then never brought up again. There is a second book, and the dragon probably plays a bigger role there. Let’s hope, because it’s cool. Finally, the entire book was leading to a final battle with Morgana, and then said battle started and ended within 2 chapters. We never saw Morgana until that final battle. I wish we had seen her more so we could properly hate her!
Overall, very glad Goodreads recommended this for me! I definitely got more than I expected. If you like King Arthur books, modern takes on mythology, and stories with a good dose of humor and sarcasm check this one out!
