Nan B. Ashcraft, age 93, of Benton passed away Tuesday December 20, 2016. She was born March 2, 1923 in Ft. Smith. Nan was a housewife and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Little Rock. Eva Jean Mills, age 92, of Haskell passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2016. She was born March 3, 1924 in Traskwood. Eva was retired from the Benton Service Center as a Dental Assistant. She was a member of the Mt. Harmony Missionary Baptist Church. Charles Lester “Chuck” Schif, 88, of Hot Springs Village, formerly of Creve Coeur, Missouri, passed away peacefully on December 17,2016. He was born December 24, 1927 in St. Louis, Missouri, to the late William and Lydia (Meyer) Schif. Chuck retired from the US Postal Service and enjoyed golfing and spending time with his loving wife, golfing buddies, family, church family, and numerous friends. He was a member of Christ of the Hills Methodist Church. A veteran of World War II, he served in the US Navy on the USS Perry as a gunner. Chuck is held in loving memory by his beloved wife, Shirley (Short) Schif, daughter, Charla Reece of West Palm Beach; sister, Betty (Eugene) Collins and brother Alvin Schif of St. Louis, Missouri; grandson, Michael Lewis of West Palm Beach; brothers- in-law, sisters-in-laws, and numerous nieces and nephews. Bill Lloyd, 72, of Mabelvale, passed away on December 14, 2016. He was born on May 21, 1944 to the late W.K. Lloyd and Deenie Hunt in Rapides, LA. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, football and spending time with his family. He retired from Maracopa County Women’s Prison after many years of employment. He is preceded in death by his parents, step-father, Reginald Westmacott, wife, Faye Lloyd, brother, Ronnie Lloyd, and sister, Susie McIntosh. Rosy Yarberry of Mabelvale, passed away on December 18, 2016. She was born October 23, 1922 to the late Joseph Beck and Nellie Beck (Jones) in Prattsville, Arkansas. She loved cooking for her family, and Sunday get-togethers. She was a charter member at New Hope Church of the Nazarene. She was retired from Essick Manufacturing after 30 years of employment. She is preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 69 years, Elmer Yarberry; daughter Loretta Dixon; three grandsons, Jason, Quinton and Keith Yarberry; granddaughter, Minnie; three brothers and nine sisters. Gary Don Sauls, age 66 of Mabelvale, passed from this life on December 21, 2016 Gary was born on April 25, 1950 in Sheridan, Arkansas to his parents, Clarence and Katherine Sauls. He enjoyed building cars, fishing, camping and sitting outside telling stories to his friends and family and was also an accomplished pool player, winning many tournaments. Gladys Pope Newcomb, age 87, of Benton, formerly of North Little Rock, passed away Friday, December 16, 2016 with her family by her side. She was born July 17, 1929 in North Little Rock to the late William E. and Erva Mae Metz Pope. . She and her husband, George H. Newcomb, Sr., were the former owners and operators of George’s Auto Service in North Little Rock. They married in 1947, the same year that she was crowned Arkansas State Rodeo Queen. At that time, she was presented a white horse, a saddle, and a bridle by the late T.H. Barton. In 1997, on the fiftieth anniversary of this award, she was honored at the Arkansas State Fair and Rodeo in Little Rock. She spent the last sixteen years working her booth at Blue Suede Shoes, as being one of the original renters when it opened in Benton. . In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, William E. Pope. . Survivors include her son, George H. Newcomb, Jr., and wife, Mary Louise of Benton; one grandson, Adam Newcomb and wife, Briana of Benton; one granddaughter, Katie Harper and husband, Chad of Prattsville; four great-grandchildren, Madalyn, Braylee, Roanee Kate, and Raynee Belle, and two sisters-in-law, Bess Pope of Alexander and Merle Newcomb of Benton. Virginia Martin, 88, of Alexander, Arkansas passed away December 22, 2016. She was born July 1, 1928 in Henderson, Texas to the late Collie and Gladys Yates Williford. Virginia was a current member of Congo Road Missionary Baptist Church. She was a long-time member and worker at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in North Little Rock where she was the director of the Respite Care Center, which gives caregivers assistance in caring for their elderly parents. Virginia and her husband, Joe were owner operators of Martin’s Market in North Little Rock for over ten years. Virginia was an avid button collector. She has sewn thousands of buttons onto fabric pieces that decorated many rooms of her home. She also loved flowers and gardening. Virginia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Martin; parents, Collie and Gladys Williford; brother, E.J. Williford; and grandson, Joey Vanness. Dr. Jean Garton of Benton was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 4, 1929 and died on December 23, 2016 at the age of 87. She and her loving husband of sixty-two years, the late Reverend Horace “Chic” Garton were blessed with four children, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. God used Jean to be a world-renown expert on pro-life issues. He provided her with opportunities to testify before the U.S. Congress and state legislatures concerning life issues. Her writings include books such as Who Broke the Baby?, scripts for documentary videos, and daily radio commentaries for five years, plus countless articles on numerous topics. She traveled the world speaking before royalty and government leaders as well as at gatherings of three or four to deliver the message God had entrusted to her. Even with all of Jean’s accomplishments, at the end, what mattered most to her was the knowledge that eternity was secure not because of all she had done but by the blood of her Savior, Jesus Christ. In Him all her sins were forgiven. Through Him, she, her family and many friends, and all others who place their confidence in Him will rise from the dead when He returns.
