Book: Save the Last Cookie For Someone Else
Author: Richard McKeown
My Rating: 5 Cookies
Richard McKeown is a local resident who took his words of wisdom and turned them into a book. If you ask him why, he would tell you it began as jotting down life lessons to refer to later, but it morphed into a heartfelt project for his grandchildren. This is evident as you flip through the pages. I dare you to read it and NOT hear the voice of your grandma or grandpa dropping wisdom on you in the short form of a one liner that leaves you thinking about it all day long.
Richard brought me a copy of the book a few weeks ago and I set it on my desk at work. Every time someone stopped by they would read the title and chuckle. I would encourage them, “Open it to any page, and read it.” Each time they indulged me, and most of them read several more pages before leaving. It seems cute at first glance, but this is a book that packs a lot of wisdom into a few words. It’s a unique book in that it only has three sentences at most on each page. However, every page is insightful and just plain good advice. My Grandmama would have approved.
When I met Richard, he told me that he could have expanded upon each thought – how he learned that lesson, or what it means to him – but he thought it better to leave the thought alone and let the reader interpret it in the way that was most meaningful to them. I think that’s a revolutionary style of writing. Each page means something different to each reader! At it’s core, it’s a meaningful book, born out of love for family and the desire to leave a good legacy.
I think this book would be a great gift, I’ve thought of using it as journal prompts because each page sparks deeper thoughts. It could also be a tool for any teachers who do “thought of the day” type activities in their classrooms. If you would like to purchase a copy (and support a local author!) you can contact Richard by email [email protected]. He also mentioned in a recent blog post that the book will soon be available on Amazon!
